Specialisms: Epilepsy, absence seizures, disabilities, resilience, mental health, overcoming adversity, adapting following a diagnosis, driving, transport

This past year has been personally dominated by my return to driving following more than three decades with epileptic absense seizures.

Who wants to have a speaker or panelist at their event or virtual meeting? Someone who has half a life time living with a restrictive medical condition. Who would value that insight? What could’ve been done differently to make that journey easier? How can my experience make it simpler for others in the future?

Do you want to know about the loneliness, the frankly shocking way I was spoken to by a consultant in front of student doctors, the seemingly random trial and error of medication that left me sat in a darkened room with my head spinning not knowing what was happening?

What about the missed opportunities? The resilience? The successes of still being able to train and run four London marathons or forcing myself to put myself on stage to interview an Olympian in front of 200 people or a radio mic to a Brit Award winner even if the risk of having black out told me not to.

What about the challenges of resetting my life from having so long living one way and then having to change? There are many layers to my story waiting to be explored.

In addition, I have spoken to over 50 ICT students at Bradford College to talk about technology in the workplace. My career background is design, marketing and communications and it was opportunity to share my story of how my role evolved especially as the Internet didn’t really exist when I set out. The theme is that the only constant is change and that we always have to be on the look out for opportunities to improve our skills.

While my talks speak of challenges I aim to cover the positives of what is possible and what we can do together to create lasting change. In the end we are all just passing through and the aim is to leave this World in better place than we found it.
