Neurodiversity - short for neurological diversity - is a concept conveying the infinite variation between human brains and central nervous systems. We each think, learn, process and experience the world uniquely.
Many members of Speakers Collective identify as neurodivergent, meaning we acknowledge that our cognitive profiles diverge from the dominant societal idea of normal.
We may have neurotypes such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or tourette’s.
We may have acquired neurodivergence due to neurological changes resulting from, for example, psychiatric conditions, long Covid, traumatic brain injury, stroke, or Parkinsons.
Rather than viewing neurodifferences through a pathological lens, the neurodiversity paradigm recognises that cognitive diversity is advantageous.
I have created an accessible explainer video here with captions at the top, and transcript in the description.
This year, Neurodiversity Celebration Week (NCW) is week commencing 16 March.
NCW aims to:
Highlight the advantages of neurological diversity
Challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurodivergence
Promote understanding, acceptance and compassion for all kinds of minds
Encourage neuroinclusion in work, education, communities, and across society.
🎥 What Speakers Collective Members Are Doing
